Ok, I'm curious. Say Mr Y has 3 sons from a first marriage, and he marries Mrs T who also has 3 daughters from her first marriage. Would it be legal in the eyes of our law for Mr Y's son to marry Mrs T's daughter? In other words, is it legal for step sisters and step brothers to get married in Singapore?

Heh, you must have read fanfic or something.

I don't know really, it's a little screwed up that you can't date someone just because their dad decided to marry your mom or whatever.

Singapore's Penal Code says:

Any man who has carnal knowledge of a woman with or without her consent who is to his knowledge his grand-daughter, daughter, sister, half-sister or mother (whether such relationship is or is not traced through lawful wedlock); or

any woman of or above the age of 16 who with consent permits her grandfather, father, brother, half-brother or son (whether such relationship is or is not traced through lawful wedlock) to have carnal knowledge of her (knowing him to be her grandfather, father, brother, half-brother or son, as the case may be), is said to commit "incest."

I'm not sure how they define half-brother/ half-sister - does it only apply to those who have one parent in common :-???

aha. ya precisely. i mean it doesn't really count as incest if your step brother/sister comes from an entirely different set of parents right?

half-brother/half-sister by definition are those with one parent in common. So technically you can marry your step-bro/sis as long as you don't share blood :)

http://app.rom.gov.sg/internet/efile/prohibited.htm

as far as i can see, there's no problem there.

thanks but they didn't include like step fathers/mothers in there. so it doesn't really count? i think a case like that has never happened in singapore.

if you look carefully they actually list things like "Mother's husband" (as opposed to 'father'), so they already took step-parents into consideration.

this is the complete list of prohibited relationships from the ROM website, meaning that whatever they've left out is currently legal. i think.

Why wouldn't it be legal since they do not have a 'blood' relationship? Besides the legal aspects of things, marriage between close family members (eg first cousins) are generally unacceptable because of medical reasons, I believe, inbreeding might be the right term?
